I have read with much interest the letter (Starmail Aug 17) concerning politics and league members in Penang.
One paragraphs reads : According to the standing by laws of Umno a member has to be a Malay or a bumiputra to qualify for Umno membership.
May I remind the writer that the bye laws do not state what kind of a Malay he must be.According to the Malaysian Constitution a Malay is an individual or one who embraces the Muslim faith and adopts Malay customs.
Any layman understands that one who cares to embrace the Muslim faith and adopt Malay customs could refer himself as a Malay if he so wishes.
